Story time, gather round my fellow robins! Some who work for big businesses can probably relate.

I work for a rather large clothing chain as a cashier where you can expect great things. I’m still learning all of the tricks , and roughly a week ago a fellow cashier taught me how to check for fake coupons that customers will make with Photoshop and then print out, claiming they got them from emails. He taught me all of the obvious signs, such as faded text on the fine print, never seeing that coupon before, a different font for the date, and the promotion mentioning Thanksgiving (Seriously? It’s friggn June at the time of writing). The thing he stressed was to not scan the bar code, and instead key in the numbers below the bar code since those are pretty difficult to forge.

Fast forward to today, lo and behold a customer comes to my register with a blatant forgery. I could see it was fake the moment she handed it to me, keyed in the numbers as instructed and of course it was rejected. She goes into this rant about how I’m an idiot and should scan the bar code like a normal person, and that I was wasting her time. I type it in again, politely telling her I have been instructed by management not to scan bar codes for coupons and to instead type them in. After the second time it is rejected she demands to see a manager, saying her husband got his to work just yesterday.

After calling my manager, having her explain that it’s not a real coupon, the lady storms off for roughly 4-5 minutes, returning to my register, slamming the coupon down, shouting how she called my corporate office and they said to just scan the bar code. Seriously? I may be new to this job, but you did NOT call the head of my company and come to that conclusion in less time than it takes me to ring up another customer. I immediately call my manager back, who notices the lady waving her phone at me and shouting about how she’ll get us all fired. I could just see the look of defeat and exasperation in my manager’s eyes as she simply walked up, scanned her item, and took off the 10 dollars from her fake coupon saying that we will accept it this time. I don’t know what’s worse, the customer trying to pull 10 more from her purse, or the customer going to the other side of the store to try and use said 10 other coupons on an unsuspecting cashier. (Which my manager promptly stopped, thankfully.)

I enjoy being a cashier, I like to make customers laugh and smile, but I hate working for big retailers. They are too afraid of losing a customer to put their foot down when this kind of thing happens, though in my opinion that customer probably wasn’t worth keeping in the first place.
